- Strommast Österreich „Ugly vs. beautiful“ This power pole supplies a small village in the Alps with energy. It does not look very nice and it would be a great opportunity to renew it, to make it look better and to make it fit better into the overall picture of the village. It would have also have some environmentally friendly aspects because it would be rebuild and so it will work with the highest technology, and the risk of failures is much lower. And of course it would look better, but it would take a lot of money and years of work.
- Progress and growth are coupled in our system to an immeasurable energy demand and associated to a high burden on people and nature. Even after technical innovations, the coal power plant shown here has an efficiency of only 42 percent. Far more than half of up to 7000 tons of coal, it needs daily, so be blown unused into the atmosphere. Prosperity and a high technical standard of living lead to a loss in quality of life, when in sight smokes a large power plant or a wind wheel hums. Whether a modern wind wheel, solar farms or huge classical nuclear or coal power plants – they all need a lot of space and are visible from a distance, so they change the landscape to a large extent and usually not for the better. In the shadow of such structures even large, old houses seem small and insignificant. Nevertheless, power plants of any kind must be accepted. But if the much vaunted “energy revolution” should be successful, an “energy-use-revolution” is required. But that can only come from ourselves.

- “The destruction of nature by modern architecture” Sunset at the Industrial Port in Bremerhaven (2013); The Weser flows into the North Sea. At this place the big ships arrive from all over the world to get goods. They get their freight by big cranes called Manipulatoren. When the cargo ships are fully loaded they start their journey to far-away coasts. You can see one of this Manipulatoren on the right side of the photo. The small part of the river (at the bottom of the photo) seems to be out of place and barely sticks out. In the background there is a tall chimney which blows out smoke. It looks like a synthetical cloud and is just a little bit darker than its natural opponent. The synthetical cloud and the silhouette of the industrial buildings break up the softness and the naturalness of this colorful sky. It makes the scene harder and gives more contrasts which makes this photo more interesting and in a different way beautiful. This photo shows in a proper way how we humans and our beauty ideals have changed.

- This photo shows yellow benches in a big beautiful park. We can see the contrast between the beautiful and the ugly. Indeed, these yellow benches do not match the magnificent trees. Besides, the forest is quite dark while the benches are brightly colored. I took this picture because I was surprised and a bit shocked at seeing these modern and cold metal objects in such a natural environment. The City decided to install such modern benches to give dynamism to this environment and to attract younger people and families because many inhabitants had left the town in the past decades for lack of employment. To finish, the park and these benches benefit the population: people can sit, relax and enjoy the place. Nowadays, more and more families settle in Graulhet.
- This photograph shows a combination of three buildings. On the right, we can see a very old building which dates from the Middle-Ages. In the middle, there is a building which dates from Renaissance and which has been renovated. To finish, we can see a building from the 50s on the left. On the building in the middle there is a painting depicting Jesus taken down from the cross. We can also notice a bell tower on the slate roof. I took this picture because of the astonishing combination of 3 very different architectures. There’s a real contrast between the old on the right and in the middle and the new on the left, which, in my opinion, spoils the 2 other buildings. This modern building is an old people’s house: the City had it built because the population is ageing and more and more old people need a place to go when they’re not able to live on their own any more.

- These are three iron statues. I took this picture on the beach in Rotterdam. The three statues are looking at the North Sea. They remind us of the three Wise Monkeys who embody the proverbial principle to “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”. I like it because of the contrast between the sea, nature, and modern art. It was surprising to see these statues on the beach. Tourists are surprised when they see them. The City had these statues installed on one of the most popular beaches of the area to attract more tourists and make the site different from all the other beaches of the world. Thus, instead of coming to this beach merely to see the North Sea, tourists come to enjoy art and a pleasant moment outside.
- This photo was taken in Graulhet. It presents a contrast between the old and the new. On the photo we can see, in the foreground, an old well near a horse sculpture made out of a bush. There is a lot of vegetation. In the background we can see a supermarket. I took this photo because I was shocked by the cold aspect of the metal and the warmth of the vegetation. This construction benefits the supermarket. It is so huge that it almost hides this beautiful heritage from the past. Today, instead of coming to see the well, people come to do their shopping.
- The picture shows an ancient farm in Diebrock, Herford, Germany (built 1786), that lies in between new built houses like a relict of former times. The acres of the farm have been declared building land and sold. Some animals rest at the farm and build a nice contrast to the town life. The only thing that is not liked well is the dung pile.
- Autobahnrastplatz “Destruction of landscape through architecture” At this Highway they are building a new roost, with a big restaurant and lots of parking spots for cars and trucks. Before they started to build it there was forest and meadow. This new roost destroys the living room of many animals and plants and destroys the natural landscape. With buildings like these the landscape gets destroyed and things like floods and climate warming happen because of the surface sealing and much more traffic. Another point of destruction is the waste that is thrown out of the cars, that has to be taken off the landscape.
